Welcome to UMTech

This page is designed to help teachers become familiar with technology tools that can be integrated into their classroom. Click on the name of the website and it should open in a new page!

Please feel free to add any technology tool with which you are familiar. I added a template that can be copied and pasted to aid in posting and to help the website's look remain consistent. TEMPLATE#. Name of Tech ToolHow do you use or have you used this tech tool in your classroom? How would you suggest that someone who is new to this tech tool start out? Are there resources that you would suggest? (include links where appropriate) Any other helpful suggestions are encouraged!

1. Wikispaces
I use wikispaces in my classroom as a central place for all documents, assignments, and resources. You can visit my site at http://shannongoodwin.wikispaces.com. I would suggest that teachers who are new to wikispaces design a central page, get comfortable with using and editing the central page, and then create new pages from there.

2. Google Search
You can perform an advanced search using google to find premade PowerPoints for topics you may be teaching in your classroom. - Thanks, Ann!

3. Clickers
These can be used to take tests, especially multiple choice questions. Students can log in with A, B, C, or D and even answer questions with numerical answers.

Sharon Wright (Fayetteville School - English 7 and 8) contributed Techs 4-6.
4. Moodle
Moodle is a learning system that enables me to have a paperless classroom. From assignments to resources to quizzes, my students use Moodle like a virtual three-ring binder. Moodle is free, but school systems have to purchase a server on which to host the system.

5. Mixbook.com
This is an excellent tool for creating and presenting cool, digital scrapbook-like books, and you have the option of embedding them to your website and/or ordering them to have a hardcopy. I've used this with students as a final product for research and for creating poetry books.

6. Thatquiz.org
A super simple, user friendly website that allows you to search for and use or create your own multiple choice, matching, and even essay tests...then grades it for you! A teacher's dream website, and students love it, too.

7. Glogster
This is an easy tool to allow students to do an interactive online poster. Students can add music and pictures. It is also an easy way for teachers to grade projects. No bulky mess to carry home.

8. Quizlet.com
This is a website that can be used in class as a tool for review of vocabulary, or students can use it at home to study vocabulary. Start out with a set of vocabulary words on a subject and check out the different ways you can review them. You can look at them in digital notecard form, or play games matching the word with the definition. You can also access sets of words for topics made by others.

9. Classmarker.com
This website allows me to register my students very quickly to set up my classes. Then I can create online tests and have the students go in and take a test. It give the students their grade instantly (effective feedback), and I can quickly access the scores and put them into I-Now. I can also link the tests to my class moodle.

10. Surveymoney.com
You can set up qick and easy surveys that can also be displayed on wiki's, webpages, or moodle pages. The surveys can be for fun. They can be used for school-wide or classroom voting. They can also be more content based or lesson-based and be used as an effective formative assessment. You can set the survey up to see names with the results or just see the results percetages to see what percentage of your class is comprehending what has been taught.

11. Readwritethink.orgThis tech tool has been around for a while, but it is still one of the best. It contains numerous lesson plans by great teachers who have "been there and taught that". It is very easy to navigate. Readwritethink also offer places for the kids to work and use interative lessons and practice. It is a must for a Language Arts Teacher.

12. iEtherPad.org I have become addicted to this since learning about it at our 21st century learners meeting. It is an interactive document that several people can edit at the same time. Great for creating working documents, lists, or sharing ideas with colleagues.
